📖 Dream Interpretation Guide

How to Interpret Dreams

A practical 7-step dream interpretation guide combining 1,400 years of Islamic tradition with modern psychological insights.

📌 Summary

Dream interpretation is both an art and a science. When the 1,400-year heritage of Islamic tradition meets the findings of modern psychology, dreams take on multi-layered meanings. This guide presents a practical 7-step dream interpretation process that unites Ibn Sirin's method with the approaches of Jung and Freud.

The 7 Steps of Dream Interpretation

1

Write the Dream Immediately

Write down the details before the dream fades - setting, people, emotions, colors, sounds, and the sequence of events. Every detail affects the interpretation.

Within five minutes of waking, about 80% of a dream begins to fade. Record your dream in a notebook, phone, or dream journal. Who was there? Where were you? What did you feel? What colors stood out? These details form the foundation of Islamic and psychological interpretation.

2

Note When the Dream Occurred

Pay attention to whether the dream was near dawn (seher) or earlier in the night. In Islamic interpretation, dreams near dawn are most likely to be 'sadıq' (true) dreams.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, 'The truest of dreams are those seen at the time of dawn.' Dreams from earlier in the night are usually 'nefsi' dreams arising from daily preoccupations and typically don't require interpretation.

3

Pay Attention to the Emotion

The main emotion felt in the dream - peace, fear, joy, anxiety - determines whether the dream is positive or negative. The same symbol can mean different things with different emotions.

For example, seeing water peacefully signals blessings, while drowning in it signals hardship. Emotion is the most important factor shaping the meaning of a symbol.

4

Analyze Each Symbol Separately

Examine each main object, person, and event as a separate symbol. Research each symbol in Islamic sources (Ibn Sirin, Nablusi, Jafar al-Sadiq).

For example, 'being chased by a dog' has three symbols: the dog (enemy or harmful person), the chase (fear/escape), and the one running (you). Each is interpreted separately, then combined.

5

Place the Dream in Your Personal Context

The same dream can mean different things for different people. Relate the dream to your life events, emotional state, and current concerns.

A woman dreaming of being pregnant may receive a literal pregnancy sign if married, or a sign of a new project if she's a professional. The dreamer's state shapes the interpretation.

6

Compare Islamic and Psychological Interpretations

Research the symbol's Islamic interpretation (Ibn Sirin, Nablusi) and its psychological interpretation (Freud, Jung). Combine both perspectives.

Islamic interpretation reveals the dream's spiritual and symbolic dimension; psychological interpretation reveals its subconscious and emotional dimension. Combining the two gives the most comprehensive understanding.

7

Share Good Dreams, Keep Bad Ones Private

The Prophet (PBUH) advised sharing good dreams with loved ones and keeping bad dreams private. After a nightmare, spit lightly to the left three times and recite Euzu Besmele.

To be protected from the effect of bad dreams, reciting Ayat al-Kursi, changing sleeping position, and giving charity are all recommended practices from Islamic tradition.
